When Madi was little she fell in love with reading. Her grandma and mother would read to her before naps or before bed; with that she was also told verbal stories by her parents. She got to pick out her favorite book for bedtime, and sometimes her mother would even read her a series of books, like Winnie the Pooh. As she got older, she would be involved in the summer reading program at the library, and would go on trips to the library with her cousins, always raiding the bookshelves. These experiences taught her the use of reading in life, and showed her that even though she wasn't a fast reader, she was still a good one. She was shown the meaning of stories and she grew a love for reading, which she continues to this day. Madi loves to read, as much as she can with her busy schedule, and tries to pick books that will be easy to read but will also challenge her in new ways. Reading isn't always on the table because of her busy schedule, but when things slow down a bit, she will pick up a book from her at-home-library, make some tea and try to finish the book before the next thing comes along. One of her favorite things to do while reading is to think of what she would do in the situation that the characters may get in. It does not matter what type of book she is reading, whether she likes it or not, she always puts herself in the characters shoes. Madi can read anything that is given to her, but like others, will not read it in a timely manner if it does not interest her, or if the writing is not the best. She also likes to see new ideas and views that are projected into other people's writing. Madi is not currently reading a book, however over the summer she read around 4 book. Some of these books include, Sway by Kat Spears, and Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. She also read around 6 or 7 books last year, including books for her English class, but can not remember the other titles. As for some of Madi's favorite authors she likes Nicholas Sparks novels, J.K. Rowling, and John Green. She is surrounded by books in her home, and always has been, so she enjoys picking up a book when she can. Madi would describe herself as a decent reader. She loves to read, but has not been able to due to her schedule. She can read well, pick out the necessary information and think about the issues or ideas presented in the reading.
Madi considers herself a writer, based on her experiences in elementary school. Ever since elementary she has had to write stories or her thoughts down on paper. She always enjoyed doing creative writing in school, and loved free write time. She would always make up a story or tell something that happened in her day. She even wrote "books" when she was younger, basing characters off of some of her family or friends. Madi sees that people write to express themselves, they write to showcase their ideas or to open people's minds. It is a way for people be themselves, without having to really talk to people. They don't need to worry about backlash in a public or real life manner. Madi is under the impression that in order to be a good writer you need to have be able to read well and comprehend the things being reading. Imagination, and the ability to think in different ways is also needed in order to make the story new and interesting for people. The biggest thing that a good writer needs is the ability to understand words, how they work and how to put them together in the right way. This brings us to the types of writing that Madi likes to partake in. She really enjoys writing fiction stories, and when she was little wrote quite a bit of them. Friction is the most comfortable for her, and likes the creativity she gets with it. She, like many others, likes to write about things she is passionate about or has an interest in. She doesn't really like to write about herself much, and finds it somewhat awkward. She finds a lot of her inspiration from books or movies around her. She also had a very imaginative nephew, and a crazy family that inspire most of her characters. Mostly it's things that she just thinks about, and they become ideas for her writing. Madi responds to helpful and supportive criticism. If her teacher gives her a clear explanation of what she is doing wrong, and gives some alternative ideas, she can adapt and figure out what she needs to do. She does not write as much as she use to when she was younger, although sometimes she will write in a journal if her day was stressful or bad to relieve the pressure. When Madi does write, she feels really good about the content of what she has put down on the paper. She is not the most confident writer, but she can string words together to make them sound pretty if she needs to.
